At LaneHead Farm, we love welcoming dogs as much as their owners. Over the years, we've gathered plenty of tips for making the most of a dog-friendly Lake District holiday.
Why the Lake District is Great for Dogs
The Lake District is a paradise for dogs – endless walks, lakes to swim in, and plenty of dog-friendly pubs for post-walk refreshments. Most attractions welcome well-behaved dogs on leads, and you'll find water bowls outside many cafes and shops.
Our Favourite Dog-Friendly Walks
Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path
Flat, easy going underfoot, and no livestock to worry about. Perfect for dogs of all ages and fitness levels.
Around Derwentwater
The lakeside path offers plenty of opportunities for a paddle. Keep dogs on leads near the boat landings.
Latrigg
A gentle fell with stunning views and usually quiet. Dogs can run free once away from the road.
Whinlatter Forest
England's only true mountain forest has waymarked trails and dogs are welcome off-lead in most areas.
Dog-Friendly Pubs
- The Dog and Gun, Keswick – The name says it all
- The Horse & Farrier, Threlkeld – Cosy pub with dog treats
- The Pheasant, Bassenthwaite – Beautiful setting, dogs welcome in the bar
Tips for Walking with Dogs
- Check for livestock – Always keep dogs on leads around sheep, especially during lambing season (March-May)
- Bring water – Mountain streams look appealing but carrying fresh water is safer
- Watch the temperature – Hot days can be tough on dogs; walk early morning or evening
- Check access – Some areas restrict dogs during bird nesting season
